I was not impressed with all the novelties this year. It seems a year of ‘going back to your roots’. Although everyone expected that it would be a quite fair, it was rather busy (visitors) and many brands still sounded positive…

Omega Autoquartz? A.K.A. Omegamatic?

Yah, they made one, not long ago in about 1997 and ran production just for a short time? Autoquartz for the Swatch group kinda took a slide to Tissot and Omega left it there to stay. The company does something strange. They offer a standard, three-hand automatic watch with special “modules” for various purposes including trekking and diving. The modules are actually digital so you have a cool digital system on top of a cooler analog watch.

Obviously their stuff is expensive but it’s definitely cool to see a watch brand embracing new media to tell their story.

How much would you pay for an Android phone? $99? $199? Maybe $299 with contract?

How about $50,000. As you recall, the Ulysse Nardin Chairman is a freaking $50,000 phone. It’s only in beta right now, but it will run Android 2.1 and come in multiple styles including a model covered with diamonds. The box, as you’ll see in the video, is nutso too. It’s basically a dock with speakers and a USB port.

The phone is made for the ultrarich. As the charming young lady who showed it to us explained, it’s for folks who can’t bring their Ferraris into the club and need something equally ostentatious.

I have a few decidedly grumpy things to say about the phone here but seeing it in person – and basically understanding the ludicrousness of the idea – have made me a believer. Sadly, the phone will not be carrier subsidized but it will work on most GSM frequencies. If you’re confused by that last thing, just have your manservant put your SIM card in for you and have another mimosa.

Bell and Ross Unisex BR-S Mat Black Ceramic

In the 18 years since its debut as a company, Bell & Ross has truly made a name for itself in the world of luxury watches. Their biggest success thus far has been with their Instrument watches launched in 2005. Now Bell and Ross will introduce a new version of two of their most popular watches, the BR-01 and BR-03. These models will now be available with a smaller, 39 millimeter case size. While the other model are quite large this unisex size will allow Bell and Ross to tap into a new market of watch connoisseurs that may have previously stayed away from the brand, and may even attract some of the female demographic.

The new BR-01 and BR-03 watches feature a 39 millimeter matt black ceramic case in its well known square case shape. Notable is the use of a matte finish instead of a glossy polish of the previously developed models. Each case is fitted with four black steel screws. The dial also features white photo-luminescent markers and hands for great visibility under poor light conditions, displaying the functions of hours, minutes and small seconds. The watches are completed with a rubber strap. The watch is powered by the ETA.980.163 precision quartz movement.

The Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra Annual Calendar Watch

Omega is presenting the newest addition to its Aqua Terra collection at Baselworld this year in the form of an Annual Calendar watch. The new addition uses the same Omega movement that was introduced two years ago in the DeVille Hour Vision watch. The Co-Axial calibre 8611 movement automatically adjusts itself through the year to show the correct date, with the only exception being at the transition between February and March. The Aqua Terra Annual Calendar is unique in that while its a complication watch, it retains the look of a sports watch. The variance from the norm is something that could make or break the Aqua Terra Annual Calendar Watch, but I for one believe that it will be a great success.

The Seamaster Aqua Terra Annual Calendar timepiece will be available in a two-tone model with stainless steel and 18 carat red gold as well as in stainless steel. The dial is decorated with a teak pattern, vertical lines similar to that of hardwood decks of boats. The dial features faceted gold hands and triangular hour markers with a brushed finish and polished bevels. Each marker is treated with highly luminescent Superluminova material for great readability in even dark surroundings. The bracelets has both brushed and polished finishing and feature a premium quality link removal system with screws.

This watch displays both day and month, as well as hours, minutes and central seconds. The Omega 8601/8611 self-winding movement is Controle Officiel Suisse des Chronometres (COSC) certified and can be viewed through the sapphire crystal exhibition window in the screw-down caseback. Unlike the long-serving Swiss lever escapement, the Omega Co-Axial Escapement ensures long term precision through superior mastery over the effects of friction.

The new classic men’s chronograph watch was developed and crafted entirely by Patek Philippe in the manufacture’s workshops. Aiming to create one of the most beautiful chronograph calibers ever made, Patek Philippe's Ref. 5170J had to outperform its predecessor, the CH 27-70 PS. The new 29-535 PS caliber movement was first introduced last November with the launch of the Patek Philippe Ladies First Chronograph after over five years of development. Rolex's original Explorer timepiece has now been joined by a larger 39mm version. Though only a 3mm difference its a huge step for the watch after only being available at 36mm for decades. Perhaps following the trend of larger and larger case sizes for luxury watches, this may be a smart move for the brand and could bring back some potential customers who are looking for a more visually impressive timepiece.

The 39mm Rolex Explorer has a case and bracelet crafted from 904L stainless steel and still features the classic smooth polished bezel. The black dial is protected by a flat sapphire crystal with slightly raised edge. The placement of the Explorer name has been moved on the larger version to sit above the Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified writing at the bottom of the dial. The new Explorer is powered by a mechanical movement Caliber 3132 designed and manufactured by Rolex. The movement beats at 28,800 vibrations per hour, and has a power reserve of up to 48 hours. The Rolex Explorer 39mm watch is Water resistance to 100 meters.

The New Rolex Submariner Date Watch Reference 116610

Rolex has reworked its Oyster Perpetual Submariner Date and changed its reference number to 116610. While the case of the watch remains 40mm in diameter the profile is noticeably squarer and has thicker lugs. Also changed is the graduated unidirectional bezel, which now lacks the anodized black aluminum insert, replaced by the Cerachrom bezel, manufactured from a special ceramic material that Rolex has developed in-house. Chosen for its immunity to UV damage and saltwater corrosion and its being being extremely resistant to scratches.
